Panel Discussion: Exploring the Nuances of Autonomy in Eating Disorder Care

This panel aims to foster a deeper understanding of the ethical nuances involved in caring for people eating disorders, particularly concerning the sensitive issue of assisted suicide. Our panelists will discuss the balance between respecting individual autonomy and duties to prevent harm, promote wellbeing, and protect vulnerable patients. We'll also explore the tension between individual autonomy and the responsibility to public safety and collective care.

Our panelists include:

  • James Downs: A prominent advocate for mental health and eating disorder awareness, known for his compelling personal journey and advocacy work.
  • Jason Wood: Director of Community Engagement at ANAD, Jason has turned his battle with orthorexia into a mission to break the stigma around men’s eating disorders.
  • Joce Leo: Community Engagement Committee member at ANAD, who believes that caring from an abolitionist-informed, harm-reductionist space shows authentic love and care for other suffering humans.
  • Maria Rago: President of ANAD, with extensive expertise in providing compassionate care and support for individuals affected by eating disorders.
  • Chelsea Roff: Founder of Eat Breathe Thrive, Chelsea is a lived experience advocate and co-authored the recent systematic review on assisted suicide in eating disorders.
This panel aims to foster a more nuanced understanding of the ethical dilemmas and responsibilities involved in treating eating disorders, particularly concerning the sensitive issue of assisted suicide.
