Give Back Yoga Foundation and Eat Breathe Thrive have been working together to bring yoga to people with eating disorders for over a decade.
The Give Back Yoga is a nonprofit organization that works to bring the benefits of yoga to all people, especially those facing mental health and physical hardship (e.g. addiction, incarceration, poverty, military service, and eating disorders).
In 2013, our Founder Chelsea Roff reached out to her friend Rob Schware — the Executive Director of Give Back Yoga — to ask if the organization would sponsor her Yoga for Eating Disorders project. She had just launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $50K to launch our organization, but she needed a way to make the donations tax deductible. Rob responded with a challenge: "If you raise $50K, we'll do it."
44 days into the 50-day campaign, the campaign was only at $19K. Chelsea knew it was time to do something dramatic, or the campaign would fail. So she climbed onto her roof, laid down on her yoga mat, and vowed to remain there until the rest of the funds were raised. For five days, she held a widely-publicized yoga strike until the campaign reached its goal. Today, Eat Breathe Thrive still thrives as a fiscally sponsored nonprofit under the Give Back Yoga umbrella.

How We’ve Worked Together
Over the years, we have worked with Give Back Yoga on many exciting initiatives. We’ve co-created online courses on the benefits of yoga for eating disorder prevention and recovery. We have also partnered to conduct scientific research on yoga and eating disorders, led by Dr. Catherine Cook-Cottone’s research lab.
In 2022 and 2023, we partnered with Give Back Yoga to offer the Yoga and Recovery Symposium: Healing Addiction and Eating Disorders. This event convened leading thinkers to disseminate research, share practices, and foster dialogue about how yoga can transform the treatment of addiction and eating disorders. Keynote speakers included Ashley Judd, Gabor Mate, and researchers from Harvard and Yale Universities.

About GBYF
Give Back Yoga Foundation was founded in 2007, by Beryl Bender Birch and Rob Schware. What began as a retirement project has grown into an international nonprofit organization with registered branches in the United States and United Kingdom. Over the past fifteen years, we have awarded more than $400,000 in grants, distributed over 35,000 yoga mats, and helped over 10,000 teachers bring yoga into prisons, hospitals, VAs, and communities in need.
